Urban Fabric Rugs
Urban Fabric Rugs creates abstracted depictions of our built environments by taking flat urban street grids and conveying them in extruded reliefs with soft hand-knotted and carved wool and silk. Each Urban Fabric Rug attempts to illustrate the uniqueness the city depicted. The compositions, together with the selected colors, celebrate this uniqueness and convey a sense of place.

Shanghai, for example is a study of the tightly knit pedestrian street system of Old Shanghai and its juxtaposition to a new, automobile dominated, residential compound high-rise urbanism.
Shanghai, for example is a study of the tightly knit pedestrian street system of Old Shanghai and its juxtaposition to a new, automobile dominated, residential compound high-rise urbanism.
Shanghai is represented with grey-on-grey tones called “Coal on Smog”, a commentary on the smoggy air quality of the city. With this limited edition collection, Atelier Manferdini + Urban Fabric Rugs present abstracted new textile patterns derived from the inherent grids found within our built environments.
