B-Side was one of four design studios that students took part in for the Making+Meaning 2021 Summer digital design program at SCI-Arc; the design workshop investigated optical effects by simultaneously exploring form, material, and light. The start point for the section looked at the 3D extrusion of various fonts of the Alphabet B. Every stage involved creating and evolving a 3D singular object, and participants played with various optical materials, lights, and the camera to create fantastical effects.
Design Sector: Concept Design

Status: Completed
Organizer: SCI-Arc
The exercises progressively increased the resolution of the design, adding layers of details and effects of abstraction through the interplay of form-optics. The formal half focused on Boolean, 3D deformation, and articulation through masking. The visual half focused on strategies of lighting and material creation.
